Laboratory simulation of strand shell stresses and strains during continuous casting*

The paper describes the testing facility used for various simulation procedures. The tests were made on in situ solidified specimens. The experience with different simulation concepts is discussed.
Results obtained with an aluminium-killed C-Mn steel are shown as an example of crack formation caused by precipitation processes in the temperature range around 900 °C. A considerable decrease in ductility occurs below 600 °C in a structural steel with higher contents of Mn, S and Cr. In the temperature range below solidus temperature, an addition of boron to an eutectoid steel shifts the start of mechanical loadability to lower temperatures by 70 K.
The simulation concept can be improved by subjecting the specimens to thermal shocks and strain-compression cycles as they occur in the various zones of continuous casters.
