Metallurgical Research & Technology celebrates 120 years of publishing
2024 marks a milestone year for Metallurgical Research & Technology. The journal, originally published under the title Revue de Métallurgie, is celebrating 120 years of publishing research advances in the ever evolving metallurgy discipline.
A journal founded by pioneers in metallurgy
Metallurgical Research & Technology has been publishing notable advances in the field since it was created in 1904 by the famous metallurgist Henry Le Chatelier, known for Chatelier’s Principle on chemical equilibrium. Founded with support from several companies in the steel industry, the journal quickly developed a strong reputation as a reputable source of research, in Europe and around the world. The journal collaborated closely with the French Steel Federation up until 2008. In 2010, Revue de Métallurgie was purchased by EDP Sciences in order to further develop the journal’s editorial processes and support the research community. The name was changed to the English language Metallurgical Research & Technology in 2015, to reflect the now international nature of the journal and its audience. EDP Sciences fully digitised and published the Revue de Métallurgie archives in 2017. The archives contain a wealth of information that continues to inform researchers today.
A journal that bridges academia and industry
One major objective of the journal has always been to ensure the bridge between academic scientists and engineers involved in the metallurgical industry and, led by expert Editors-in-Chief with invaluable industry experience, this objective has been demonstrated consistently, with tangible results over the past 120 years. Recently, several new processes or new process adaptations have been described in the papers published in the journal. This has led to improved operational practice in the industrial metallurgical plants. The economic outcomes of those papers are evidenced in the field of raw material efficiency, energy efficiency and higher productivity.
Supporting the transition towards a more sustainable future
There is a close relationship between Earth's rarest elements and those who extract and process them for the purpose of human advancement. Over time, technology has enabled the rapid refinement of these engineering processes, and now it has a duty to explore a more sustainable future for the relationship to continue. The metallurgy discipline is evolving in the face of finite resources and the research being published in Metallurgical Research & Technology is contributing to the very fabric with which our future is being made. The journal publishes research on key topics that will shape the discipline for the future, including sustainable metal manufacturing, recycling and the environment and critical raw materials processing. Many papers have contributed, directly and indirectly, to the reduction of the environmental footprint of metallurgical activities.
Recognition for pioneering research in metallurgy
Metallurgical Research & Technology authors are being recognised at every stage of their careers. In 2018, authors of an article on “New advances in the laboratory characterization of refractories” were awarded the prestigious Alfred W Allen Award, of the American Ceramic Society. Each year, the Journal Editorial Committee itself also awards the best paper based on criteria including innovation, significance to the research community and industrial relevance.
