Experimental and theoretical analysis of gas and metal flows in submerged entry nozzles in continuous casting*
Étude expérimentale et théorique de l’écoulement des fluides au niveau des busettes immergées des machines de coulée continue
On continuous casters, the injection of argon at the level of the submerged nozzle may improve the operation of the tundish-mould System and prevent disturbances responsible for slab defects. Tests with a water model have shown that with a precise control of gas injection, the risk of nozzle clogging can be limited and large disturbances of the mould meniscus can be avoided. Observations made with a hot model using liquid Steel confirmed these results. The rules derived from these model tests have been applied successfully to industrial casters.
