Solidification and specialty metals near net shape processing
Solidification et procédés de fabrication directe juste aux cotes appliqués aux alliages spéciaux
Today, even more than in the past, it is attempted to develop near net shape processing either for economical or for technical reasons. This trend results in reducing the complexity of the fabrication routes and bringing closer and closer the final state and the « as cast » state of the product to be delivered to the customer. The stage of solidification appears thus to be decisive for the quality of the finished product. From the example of parts cast for aeronautics by investment casting, a panorama of the present basic knowledge on alloy solidification related to near net shape processing is tentatively sketched.
