Growth and technical developments in the steel indsutry*
Croissance et développements techniques dans la sidérurgie
The major changes which have occurred in the steel industry during the last 40 years are reviewed in the light of both technological and social-economical factors. The merits and limits of the now optimized integrated coastal plant are compared to those of other production routes - based on ore reduction or scrap melting. The blast furnace remains an attractive process and the emerging metallurgies without coke have not yet stopped the upward trend of cokemaking capacity in the world.
