Influence of surface cleaning on wear tests
Influence du dégraissage des surfaces sur le résultat des essais d’usure
Dry wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc tribometer in order to study the effects of the cleaning agents (water and four different solvents) on the wear behaviour of AISI 9840 steel quenched and tempered at two different temperatures (450 and 600°C). The aim of this work is to help to set better the standard cleaning method before wear tests and to define which is the cleaning agent that reveals in the best way the characteristics of the material influencing as little as possible the tests. The results show that the utilized cleaning agents influence in different ways material wear according to their different degreasing capabilities and chemisorption. It has been noted that water showed wear and friction values much lower than those of the other solvents.
