An investigation into the fracture toughness of nitrided layers by Vickers indentation
Une étude de la ténacité à la rupture des couches nitrurées par indentation Vickers
In this paper we propose an approach to fracture toughness evaluation of surface layers with compositional gradient and we apply it to nitrided layers on steel. Such a test is based on the Vickers indentation technique (Palmqvist’s test). The procedure is applied to case studies including nitrided layers grown onto two types of nitriding steels subjected to gas - and ion - nitriding treatments. Fracture toughness data can be summarized in terms Kla0 « crack-arrest fracture toughness parameter » ; such a parameter is suitable for ranking purposes among different materials, treatments and nitrided layers which display the same surface hardness and/or nitriding depth.
