Diffusion in nanocrystalline metals and alloys
Diffusion dans les métaux et alliages nanocristallins
An overview is given on recent tracer diffusion studies of nanocrystalline metals and alloys.
In nanocrystalline pure metals (n-Pd, n-Fe) prepared by crystallite condensation and compaction, the diffusivities in relaxed interfaces are similarly fast as in conventional grain boundaries. A particular situation occurs in crystallization-prepared n-Fe73 5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 (Finemet) where tracer diffusion and positron lifetime studies reveal a rapid vacancy-mediated self-diffusivity in the DO3-Fe80Si20 nanocrystallites and a slow interface diffusion due to amorphous intercrystalline layers.
