An important metallurgical difficulty in arc welding of high-strength aluminum alloys is formation of solidification cracking. In this work, an attempt is made to reduce the solidification cracking in welding of aluminum alloys through vibratory treatment. The material used for the investigation is AA2014 aluminum alloy, which is highly prone to solidification cracking. Vibratory treatment was carried out in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 3700 Hz. Weldments made with and without vibratory treatment were compared using weld cracking tests and other characterization tests such as microstructural analysis. The test results show that by applying vibratory treatment, solidification cracking can be largely controlled in arc welding.
Résumé
La formation de fissures de solidification constitue une difficulté importante lors du soudage à l’arc d’alliages d’aluminium à haute résistance. Dans ce travail on étudie la possibilité de réduire la formation de ces fissures grâce à un traitement vibratoire. Le matériau utilisé dans cette étude est l’alliage AA2014, qui est particulièrement sujet aux fissures de solidification. Le traitement vibratoire a été mis en oeuvre dans la gamme de fréquences de 100 Hz à 3700 Hz. On a comparé les soudures sans traitement vibratoire et avec traitement vibratoire au moyen des tests de détection de défauts de soudure ainsi que d’autres tests de caractérisation, tels que l’analyse des microstructures. Les résultats montrent que l’utilisation d’un traitement vibratoire permet de maîtriser dans une large mesure la formation de fissures de solidification.
