The nitriding process of manganese pellet was studied in the present study in the temperature and nitrogen pressure ranges of 700 to 950 °C, and 0.2–0.6 MPa, respectively. From 700 to 850 °C, increasing temperature is beneficial for enhancing nitrogen content; while from 850 to 950 °C, there is no obvious difference among nitrogen content of different samples at different temperatures, since the sintering of manganese particles in pellet at high temperatures may happen which retards the nitriding process. By studying the influence of nitrogen pressure, it was found that a larger nitriding rate will be obtained in a high nitrogen pressure. After reacting at the high temperature for a certain time, it was found that a low cooling rate has significant effect on increasing the nitrogen content to a certain extent.
Key words: high nitrogen steels / manganese nitride / nitriding / exothermic reaction
