Cokemaking through the stamp charging route was introduced in Jindal Steel & Power Limited in 2017. Over the years, there has been a significant change in operational practices, blend coal cost, coke productivity and coke quality. The first strategy tactic was changing the mindset for operating philosophy to achieve desired productivity and coke quality. At the same time, the second approach and strategy analyzed the deficiencies of the heating regulation system to take the countermeasures to overcome them and operate the plant at optimal specific energy consumption. Thus the energy-efficient operation of the coke oven plant can only help for a reduction in specific heat consumption through optimization of the coke oven heating system without sacrificing the productivity and coke quality. This paper also touches upon the process variability, operational excellence in battery operation, improved conditions of the different types of equipment and machines to facilitate operations through the use of total quality management tools, optimization of coal blends for available coal types to produce superior coke from the same coke oven batteries without sacrificing oven health.
