Schedule free rolling by on-line roll dressing*

Hot charge rolling and hot direct rolling make it possible to increase productivity and save energy. They can be realized by schedule free rolling technique that requires on-line smoothing of work rolls wear and also increased control of crown.
Posco has developed an on-line dressing (ORD) which grinds work rolls during actual rolling. ORD allows increased number of same width strip rolling, strip width reverse rolling and extended rolls use time between two changes. Control system and software of such an on-line grinding are described.
