Assessment of alternative coated sheet steels for use in fuel tanks*
Un revêtement de remplacement pour l’acier des réservoirs d'essence
Legislation prohibiting the use of Pb products in cars is imminent, coming into effect in the next five years. It is, therefore, essential that an alternative coated steel is offered to automotive manufacturers in order to combat the increasing usage of plastics. The paper details the extensive evaluation of alternative coated steels performed at British Steel Strip Products, Welsh Technology Centre.
The main two alternatives to terne coated steel have been identified as Dorrlform and aluminized steel. The corrosion resistance of the two systems exceeds that of terne-coated steel, whilst aluminized has equivalent weldability ; Dorrlform requires Soudronic seam welding and has inferior spot welding performance. The main factor distinguishing the two products is the cost, with Dorrlform being one and a half times more expensive than aluminized.
Subject of a presentation at the 1998 ATS International Steelmaking Conference (Paris, December 1-2, 1998, Session 13).
The authors wish to thank Dr. B.J. Hewitt, Director Technical, British Steel Strip Products and Mr. E.F. Walker, Manager Technical Co-ordination, Welsh Technology Centre, for permission to publish this paper.
