A technical comparison between AC and DC furnaces*
Comparaison technique entre les fours à courant alternatif et à courant continu
The essential technical differences which influence performance and costs between AC and DC furnaces are discussed. The main topics investigated are electrical and thermal efficiencies, energy and electrode consumption and flicker.
It is concluded that energy differences are small whereas electrode consumption difference is more significant. Flicker is lower with DC due to the thyristors but additional reactance can help both types of furnace.
