Modelling of the EMBR and its influence on bubble entrapment*
Modélisation du frein électromagnétique et de son influence sur le piégeage des bulles d’argon
For the optimization of the Electro Magnetic Brake (EMBR) in Hoogovens BOS No. 2, a numerical model has been developed. This model describes the fluid flow in the mould under the influence of argon injection and electromagnetic forces of the EMBR. In addition, the model calculates the entrapment of argon bubbles in the solidifying shell.
The behaviour of argon bubbles in the mould is investigated using the model and related to the quality of the slabs.
A good agreement between model calculations and the observed contamination of the slabs is found, which proves that the numerical model is an excellent tool in optimizing the EMBRperformance.
