The detection and assessment of surface characteristics of hot strip by an on-line inspection procedure*
La détection et l’évaluation des caractéristiques de surface de la bande à chaud par une méthode d’inspection en ligne
The early detection of surface-defects such as scale, roll marks, edge cracks, shells, etc., at hot strips has now become an important issue. With an on-line inspection, an exchange of rolls can be done only if it is really necessary.
The time to react on surface-defects can be minimized. Also, damages in following production stages can be prevented.
The realization of such a system in hot strip mills is difficult, because of high line speeds, a rough environment and the radiant heat of the hot strip.
Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG has installed on-line inspection systems in its hot strip mills in Duisburg. The firm has tested these systems and additionally two other systems ; their results are presented.
