Methodology of steel cleanliness assessment*
Stratégie de caractérisation de la propreté inclusionnaire des aciers
Today a good metal cleanliness is required due to the general trend of weight saving by using thinner products. This means that the metal is subjected to increased deformations during processing.
It is therefore important to define and to improve the steelmaking process leading to the suitable steel cleanliness and to be able to assess it for the relevant products.
Correlated results were obtained by Usinor and NSC by using several techniques and samples. Recommendations for the industrial application of cleanliness assessment were formulated.
