On-line bulging and shear measurements near the straightening point in a continuous caster*
Mesure du gonflement et du cisaillement dans la zone de décintrage d’une machine de coulée continue
During continuous casting, inner cracks may form in the solidifying shell of the strand due to excessive bulging, shearing and roll misalignment. In this study, a scanning instrument was used to measure the downward bulging of the strand between two support rolls over the entire width. The bulging measured is in the same order of magnitude as predicted by mathematical models. Shear velocities on the loose side were also measured using three cameras. Velocity differences of about 1.5 % were found, confirming the “soft box” model.
