Slab width control at Hoogovens Steel*
Mesure en ligne de la largeur de brames à Hoogovens
Slab width has to be controlled to meet customer demands and to prevent costs associated with offwidth slabs. The feasible control strategies for slab width control are described and classified according to the response time of the control loop. All strategies require a prediction of slab width based on theory and slab width measurements. Six different measurement principles are known on the basis of which instruments can be constructed which have a measuring accuracy of a few millimetres or better. As a result, it has been possible at Hoogovens Staal to control slab width to within ±15 mm for all grades and casting speeds. The frequency of off-width slabs has been reduced by more than 95 % .
